A stunning place for our Winter Camp.

Another awesome week in Fue…

Once again, in early March we welcomed a cosmopolitan, internationally-based field of athletes from the UK, Jersey, Iceland and mainland Europe for our Winter/ Spring training camp at Playitas resort in Fuerteventura of the Canary Islands.

This is a beautiful resort having excellent facilities for our Triathlon camps and we are always blessed with warm temps (well over 20 celsius) but this year with more cloud, plenty testing winds and some light rain showers – providing a stern test for every bike ride.

Once again Andy and Nick led the camp, assisted this year by fellow TPS coach and former Professional from Slovakia, Alena Stevens. Over the space of 7 days the attendees enjoyed typically two training sessions a day but on many days three.

24 athletes on camp this year – over half from Jersey Triathlon club.

The week is always structured around some solid road bike mileage with three long-ish rides spaced out in the week – multiple groups supported by coaches, many of the rides having relaxed coffee and lunch stops, fully supported by a cruising van too.

Several run focussed sessions throughout the week challenged the athletes in various conditions, including when fatigued! Twice they took on the famous run to the Lighthouse, around the back of Las Playitas.

Playitas resort has a lovely 50m open-air pool for technique and conditioning sessions for our athletes, but of course also perfectly positioned right on the beach to swim in the often choppy (and not so warm for most athletes) North Atlantic.

Additionally our camps always have adjunct sessions to assist athletes outside of the exhaustion from swim, bike and run. This year Andy gave a short talk/ seminar on hydration and salt supplementation and he also led a session on bodyweight exercises, the all important (and neglected) element of body conditioning for triathlon.

One very important element of our camps is the professional, yet relaxed, approach the coaches take with the athletes. This always leads to some special highlights, this year was memorable for several group sauna ‘recovery’ sessions and a dance-off narrowly won by the Icelandic girls!

Special Mention to Kieron and Helen from Fuerteventura bike hire for supporting our cycle rides and laying on the dinner out at El Poril. Awesome.

Andy, Nick, Aya and Rik want to say thank you to all who attended and we hope to see you back for the 2020 camp.
